Autumn Moods - Bark Psychosis

When Hex came out, almost 25 years ago, it was reviewed by journalist Simon Reynolds who coined the term "post-rock" to describe Bark Pyschosis's sound. Relying more on tone and texture, muted but complex percussive layers, and a mood over melody and hooks, the band created this watershed album that groups have used as a touchstone ever since. Recently reissued on vinyl in a beautiful 2LP 45rpm pressing (currently sold out online but we have one copy at the store), this is an essential bit of music history.

Autumn Colours - Phoebe Bridgers

Phoebe Bridgers - Stranger in the Alps

The lead up to Phoebe Bridgers' debut album has been spotlit by praise from NPR who said she may be "2017's best new artist." Her confessional lyricism and hushed delivery crosswire 70s singer songwriter gauziness with the whip smart assertiveness of the best end of century indie intelligentsia. Stranger in the Alps even has a dope Mark Kozelek cover... so there's that too.

Autumn Colours: Billow Observatory

Today is a little gray, with the distant hint of bite in the air. Perfect weather and colour for the new Billow Observatory - II: Plains/Paterns. The duo is made up of Detroit's Jason Kolb (Auburn Lull) and Denmark's Jonas Munk (Manual), and this is their first release since their self-titled effort 5 years ago, which sold out worldwide. This time around the ambient sweep of their sound is given a little more of a pulse, which is perfect if you are hoping to slowly wind up or slowly wind down for/from a cool autumn day. We have the album both on vinyl (only 300 copies worldwide) and CD.

Autumn Colours: Angelo de Augustine

Fall can be a whimsical and colourful season. Why not try out some new music to suit the changes these days bring. For a start we suggest singer/songwriter Angelo de Augustine. He recently released his second full length Swim Inside the Moon (his first was self-released) on Asthmatic Kitty. It's a hushed affair that brings together the best parts of Nick Drake and Elliott Smith. If autumn early mornings have a sound, we suggest it goes something like this.

MUSIC IS ALIVE!!! Three tracks for today.

Some weeks you're faced with back-to-back-to-back unsolicited assertions that no "good" music is being made "these days" nor has any been made since [pick decade when this person was 13-17 years old]. While it's difficult to talk folks down from this opinion, all I can do is over a trio of ear-catching tracks from recent, new, and soon-to-be released albums and let you all judge for yourselves if "good" music is still a thing.

Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner, and James McAlister - Planetarium (4AD)

Available now on Vinyl and CD
.

Fond of Tigers - Uninhabit (Offseason)

Available now on CD and soon on Vinyl

This is the Kit - Moonshine Freeze (Rough Trade)

Bleep, Click, Zing! : Over the Horizon

I make no secret that I love experimental music... but part of that non-secret is that the word "experimental" is not synonymous with inaccessible. We've always had titles that are a little bit over the horizon of what some qualify as "regular rock," and you might be surprised how much fun things are here, over the horizon.  Here are five recent releases we have in stock you might find suitable for your ear-guided travels.
